Students of Rivers State University (UST) Walked Out of Amaechi As PDP Rejoiced

The Rivers State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has commended the Nigerian Students, who walked out of a gathering
conveyed by Governor Rotimi Amaechi for unjustifiably castigating President Goodluck Jonathan and for threatening them to support his personal political ambition.

PDP said the incident occurred at the Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt, on Monday.

Jerry Needam, media aide to State Chairman, Felix Obuah noted that the party received the report of the students’ action with contentment, saying it was the appropriate response to the
Governor’s continued disrespect and unwarranted abuses on the nation’s President in which he (Amaechi) superintends over the affairs of a constituent State, as Governor.

While calling on the Rivers State students and indeed all Nigerians not to be deceived or influenced by the revolutionary actions of Amaechi, which exposed his childish and immature attitude, the PDP said the governor’s actions were in pursuit of his selfish Vice
Presidential aspiration on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC.

The Party stated that it was also of the view that rather than listening to the many lies, abusive and treasonable statements from Amaechi, the students should seek explanations from him on
the delayed bursary payment and unpaid Civil Servants’ salaries.

PDP noted with regrets that a Governor, who had failed woefully in offering good governance to the people in the State, was going around talking on issues he had failed to address in the State,
stressing that in addition to the collapsed health and education sectors and the infrastructure in the State, Amaechi had at today sold out most public facilities to his relations and friends.

The Party further urged the students to rise and demand explanations on the state of their bursaries, the position of the monthly salaries of their parents, who work with the State Ministries but remain unaware of their salary table since the
inception of Amaechi’s administration.

Continuing the party said, “All we know is that Governor Amaechi is only using public funds to bribe his way to become Vice President to former military dictator, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd) of the APC.
“While we recognize the rights of the Vice Presidential aspirant, Governor Amaechi, to solicit for support under the ambit of the law, we urge him to stop abusing the President, Dr Jonathan, whom the people of the South-South and indeed all Nigerians have confidence in, and are desirous to ensure he continues on his transformation
agenda, which has rekindled the hope of the once depressed people of Nigeria.
“We also believe that if the Governor loves students and the youths he would not hesitate to pay their bursaries as at when due and accurately and will also desist from encouraging them to engage in revolutionary and violent acts capable of terminating their dreams.”
The PDP added that it was wrong for Amaechi to gather the students only to incite them against the Jonathan administration, leaving the myriad of issues unattended to in the state.

It further cautioned the governor against his continued seditious statements and abuses on the President, Dr Goodluck Jonathan at every forum he attends.

“Governor Amaechi needs to be civilized and mature in his actions and should stop exposing his youthful exuberance”, the statement concluded.

Pregnant Woman Eaten By Crocodile in Uganda

A crocodile killed and ate a pregnant woman on the shores of a lake in north-eastern Uganda, a senior wildlife official said Thursday, making her the 30th victim of such reptile attacks in the east African nation this year.

Twenty-five-year-old Dementilia Nabwire, who was two months pregnant, was collecting firewood on the shores of Lake Kyoga with several other women on Wednesday, when a crocodile jumped out of the water and pulled her into the lake.

Crocodile attacks on humans are on the increase because fish stocks in lakes have been decreasing, Uganda Wildlife Authority official Peter Ogwang.

"The woman, we have learnt, was killed by the crocodile. These animals are lacking to eat and are attacking people," said Ogwang.

Former Aviation Minister Acquitted of Money Laundry.

A Federal High Court, sitting in Lagos, has discharged and acquitted former Aviation Minister, Mr. Femi Fani Kayode of 38 out of the 40 count charge in the N100 million money laundry case brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.
Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia, who presided over the case, ordered the defendant to enter his defence.
In her ruling, the presiding judge, said certain questions has to be answered in considering the no case submission as filed by the defence counsel and certain laid down principles considered. She said such questions include: Has the prosecution led any evidence to link the accused person to the commission of the offense? Is the evidence adduced by the prosecution so credible to sway the court to compel the accused person to enter his defence and is the evidence so adduced make meaning and sense to any discerning minds?
In appraising the submissions of both the prosecution and the defence, Justice Ajumogobia, said the prosecution has failed woefully to prove beyond reasonable doubt the offense in thirty-eight counts and accordingly, discharged and acquitted the former minister.
She however ordered Fani-Kayode to enter his defence in counts twenty-five and twenty-six, noting that the prosecution has led evidence to show the ingredient of the offense.
The case was subsequently adjourned to the 8th of December for continuation after Dr. Abiodun Layonu asked for a short adjournment. Fani-Kayode is expected to open his defence on the two counts on that day.

Tambuwal Withdraws Suit Against IGP.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal on Monday withdrew his suit challenging the withdrawal of his security details by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Suleiman Abba.
The IGP had withdrawn the speaker’s security aides following his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressive Congress (APC).
At the resumed hearing of the case on Monday, Tambuwal’s counsel, Mr Tunji Abayomi, brought an application for discontinuance of the suit.
Abayomi informed the court that he was instructed by the speaker to make the withdrawal.
Mr Ade Okeaya-Inneh, counsel to the IGP and Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) however opposed the application, and urged the court to dismiss the entire suit and award costs against Tambuwal.
He argued that parties had joined issues in the case by filing counter affidavits and filing replies on the merits of the suit.
Justice Ahmed Mohammed, in his ruling struck out the suit accordingly.
The judge held that the defence counsel only responded to the preliminary motion for injunction to restrain the IGP from withdrawing his security details and not the motion on notice.
He, therefore, made no order as to costs.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Tambuwal had argued that the IGP had no constitutional powers to withdraw his security details without the order of a court.
He had also contended that he remained the Speaker of the House of Reps since he had not been impeached by his fellow lawmakers. (NAN)
